Frequently asked questions

Is FileTranslator really free?

Yes. Every converter on this site is free to use with no file limits, watermarks or accounts. The site is supported by advertising.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All conversions happen locally in your browser. Your files never leave your computer, which also makes conversion of sensitive documents safe.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no hard limit. Because conversion happens on your own device, the practical limit is your computer's memory. Very large videos may take a while to process.

Why does the first audio or video conversion take longer?

Audio and video conversion uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The engine (about 30 MB) is downloaded once the first time you need it, then cached by your browser.

What happens to animated GIFs?

Converting a GIF to an image format (PNG, JPG, …) keeps the first frame only. To keep the animation, convert the GIF to MP4 or WebM instead.

Which browsers are supported?

Any recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on desktop or mobile. Older browsers may not support every format (for example AVIF or HEIC).
